Op Shop Topics
A huge thanks to our Lions members who work in the shop and also those volunteers from other organisations who also work in the shop. Without your support the shop would not be able to operate the hours it does.
It is hard to believe that the Op Shop started more than ten years ago as a pop-up shop to cater for people visiting over the holiday period making use of the vacant newsagency. What was a short-term venture has turned into a full-time commitment due to the support of our Lions members, community organisations, and a very supportive community. Thanks so much.
OP SHOP NEWSLETTER - JULY 2026
We have decided to try to improve communication by putting out a monthly Newsletter for all shop volunteers. Please take a copy. It will not be too fancy to start with (i.e. no graphics etc.) but hopefully you will still read it.
Please don’t sweat over the following as a lot seems to be ‘what to do’. The main thing is that each shift has fun and that every person enjoys volunteering in the shop. We thank you all and appreciate your support.
There is only one Lion in Charge for each shift. Visiting Lions have no authority over the Lion in Charge or any Volunteer on that shift. The only exception to this is if it’s from the President, Vaughn. If you’re not on that shift’s roster, please respect the Lion in Charge and seek their approval to serve or get behind the counter or to stay in the shop for any length of time beyond a few minutes.
Any issues or complaints are to be directed to the Lion in Charge of that shift, or the individual group’s coordinator, or myself or President Vaughn: Noel McManus 0458 904 149 - noel.mcmanus@hallidayspointlions.org.au
Vaughn Parker – 0409 593 268 - vaughn.parker@hallidayspointlions.org.au
Most of the following items were raised at our July Op Shop meeting:
· GREEN tags only for ladies wear only for the month of June.
· Please put aside all jewelry for Lyn and Faye to price. All watches for Vaughn. Thanks.
· If time permits, can each shift try to tidy and dust one section of display? We’ll see how it goes but if someone wants to design a realistic timetable for dusting and cleaning please let me know.
· For safety reasons, please put Boxes and other donations in the donation trolley outside the shop or under tables or on shelf in staff room. There should not be any boxes on the floor, or trolleys in the shop. Customers and volunteers should be able to walk unimpeded throughout the shop.
· The shed key is now in the money till permanently, so every shift can take excess items to shed if required. Sorting clothes and excess items can be done at the Lions Shed every Tuesday from 10am for those available.
· Lions in Charge and Volunteers should read the Communication Book when signing in. Cross out items completed or no longer relevant in book. All communication in book is to be dated, have name of person writing message, and clearly state the message so it can be understood by others. All volunteers and Lions can leave messages in the book (but please don’t tell other shifts or people what to do).
· Items should be priced by 2 people.
· Use cardboard for signs and prices not ‘Post It’ notes.
· Early Childhood wooden puzzles should be in plastic sleeves and sticky taped up.
· All electrical items are to be tagged.
· Please don’t sell items with small gas cylinders. We don’t sell any gas cylinders.
· Price clothes in kitchen and not at front desk please.
· Please keep tables outside tidy – please don’t overload.
· There is a price guide for linen on the wall in kitchen.
· Children‘s clothes -good jackets are to be priced individually i.e. more than $2. Kids’ pajamas 2 pieces are $4.
· Kids books 50c, $1. All other kids books $2.
· We are currently getting no money from 1/10 so please try to sell decent items.
· A Monday morning shift has started with Tina (Lion in Charge), Toula and News of Our World volunteer.
· A petty cash envelope containing $20 is in the till. To purchase small or individual items please take money, purchase item from Foodworks, then put change and docket back in envelope.
