February Roundup

From President Vaughn

At our dinner meeting we had Nathanael Newton as our guest speaker accompanied by his mum Naomi. Nathanael was able to tell us about his experience attending a space camp in the United States. What an incredible adventure! He was able to raise most of the funds himself by collecting cans and bottles and doing jobs. Nathanael travelled to the US with a group of other students. They were able to enjoy some of the tourist places in Los Angeles such as Disneyland, Hollywood and Le Brae Tar Pits before heading to Alabama Space Centre to experience a number of space-related tasks and to view many of the space vehicles involved in American space travel.
Nathanael had a unique experience, and he hopes to be able to attend another space camp in the future. We wish him every success.
At our dinner meeting we also welcomed two more Lions into our club. Sharon Turnbull and her dad, Alan Trembath, were inducted into the Hallidays Point Lions Club by Past District Governor Sharon Bishop. Sharon and Alan have already attended a number of meetings and Alan has proved he is a skilled hand at the BBQ. We also welcomed Simone Waters. who interprets for Alan, into our 'Friends of Lions.
Gemma Sisia St Jude's School Tanzania visit: On Friday 6th March@ Black Head Surf Club, we were inspired by what has been achieved by Gemma in providing education for children from the most impoverished backgrounds in Tanzania. The school caters for 1800 children across three campuses. It was good to hear from Faith, one of the ex-students from St Jude's School who has now graduated from University as a Civil Engineer and has also established a business selling hair products. Also assisting Gemma was Johnson, an ex-student of St Jude's school.
After dinner Gemma thanked Lions for the $1500 donation and hospitality, insisting on giving two of her autographed books (worth S35 each). Thanks to Ray and John for their organisation of this event and to all Lions who provided food for the afternoon tea. Also. thanks to Lions who assisted with the distribution of the leaflets advertising Gemma’s presentation.
Special mention and thanks to Breck Muir who provided accommodation and organised a dinner for our guests.
The 'Fair Dinkum' Great Aussie Dance Party at the Surf Club on 14th March.
Over 100 people attended our second dance and again the consensus was extremely positive with many saying they had a great night and strongly supporting the idea of attending another Dance, possibly in July. So, stay tuned. Our muso. Tezza {Terry Grant) had most people up dancing throughout the evening playing Aussie Classics through to just before 11,00pm.
Again. thanks to Garry Munro and John Finnie for organising the posters, tickets and advertising and to all those who assisted with the evening. Special mention also to the bar staff for their efforts throughout the evening. A great night was had by all.
Anzac Day 25th April. Just a reminder that we will again be commemorating Anzac Day on Saturday 25th April with a Reflection time from 5:30am followed by a Dawn Service at 6.00am. Immediately following the service Hallidays Point Lions will be providing a light breakfast for attendees in the Surf Club.

Cheers, President Vaughn
