‍ Balance is Everything

Hallidays Point Lions Community Event

September 24th, 4:00pm Black Head Surf Life Saving Surf Club

‍A local Community Ambassador for Falls Prevention Alliance Australia will lead a free community talk on how older adults can reduce their risk of falls and stay independent for longer. Ima Strkljevic is a physiotherapist with almost 30 years of clinical experience, as well as a public health researcher and PhD candidate at the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health and the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

‍Falls are one of the leading causes of injury‑related hospitalisation for older Australians, with thousands admitted each year following a fall. Evidence‑based strategies including balance and strength exercises, home safety changes, medication review and vision care can significantly reduce fall risk.

‍Hosted by the Hallidays Point Lions Club, the falls prevention talk will provide practical, easy‑to‑understand information for older adults, families and carers. Attendees will learn simple steps they can take at home to improve balance, build strength, make their environment safer and know when to seek professional help.

‍“As clinicians, we see every day that many falls are preventable, and this is important since older adults are living longer and want to remain active and functional, and, most importantly- independent” says Ima. “This talk is about giving people clear, practical strategies they can use straight away, and encouraging them to stay active and confident as they age.”

‍The talk will also highlight updated Australian falls prevention guidelines and services, including exercise programs and community resources that support safe and healthy ageing. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and take-home written information to share with family and carers.

‍We are pleased to include Joseph Cheah, local owner of Shoreside Physio and Vestibular Physiotherapist in the event. Having a local professional with expertise, will allow ongoing support.

‍Local Health and fitness providers are being invited and welcome to attend.

Complementary coffee/tea and snacks will be available
